INSECURITY AS A THREAT TO OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM
Have you ever wondered what children face when they are attacked in school? I assume you haven't. Such an occurrence will have several negative effects on the students, their school, and society in general. It is a case of insecurity. Insecurity is defined as a lack of safety or a state of danger in a society. It may also be seen as a feeling of uncertainty and anxiety about oneself. It is a great threat to our education system for several reasons.
First, it leads to the destruction of lives and property. People in the attacked schools may be kidnapped or even killed by terrorists and/or perpetrators. A common example would be the abduction of 276 Chibok schoolgirls that occurred in northeastern Nigeria. A number of these girls still haven't been released. Happenings like this leave a lifelong scar on them and their family; that is if they even make it out. School facilities are also frequently destroyed in these clashes. They then have to be repaired with money that could have been used for other activities in the state. This hinders educational development in such places.
Second, students' attendance in school is severely distorted by insecurity in their society. This is because the school environment ceases to be safe. The students may end up being victims of violence, rape, or abduction; just to name a few. Due to these, parents pull their children out of the schools, and sometimes, in severe cases, the schools are shut down. A lot of students are unable to return and drop out entirely. This will lead to economic and social problems in the country, as more youth will become idle. Many criminal activities in Nigeria are associated with youth who drop out of school. Unfortunately, these dropouts are on the rise because of insecurity in the state. Those who manage to get back to school may not cope and usually end up performing woefully. Hence, insecurity severely damages the pupils' academic life.
Next, it takes away the peace and tranquility that is required for successful teaching and learning. This decreases the effectiveness of teaching. Students will not concentrate in class because of the fear of being attacked. There is, therefore, a need to restore the peace that is associated with a good learning environment. Although attempts have been made, more strict and permanent measures must be taken. Government and organizations need to intercede. They must ensure adequate protection of the schools and students. The extremists and perpetrators must also be seized and prosecuted. That way, there will be a significant decrease in the cases of these attacks and the insurgency will be effectively tackled.
To summarise, insecurity and insurgency are dangerous to Nigeria and her education system. It affects students, teachers, and schools, both emotionally and physically. It also leads to an increase in the number of school dropouts, which reduces the economic and social progress of the nation. It is an issue that ought to be of concern to everyone. Society would be a better place if more people fought against insecurity.
